Sereneville High School seemed to be the only place one could find a
healthy mixture of both classes. This morning it had a buzz of excitement as
its students chatted and told each other of how they’d spent their summers and
what, if anything, was new at school this year. Jade pulled up into the car
park just as Athena did. She got out of her car, looking curiously at Eric and
Tristan as they said their goodbyes. Her eyes lingered on Tristan’s rugged
looks, her concentration suddenly interrupted as Bryce joined her.
“Hey there,” he said, giving her a quick kiss on her mouth. He looked to
where her eyes had been a moment ago and clashed eyes with Tristan. The latter
acknowledged him with a brief nod of his head but Bryce just stared back coldly
at him.
“What’s your problem today,” Jade commented having seen the little
exchange. “The guy is just trying to be friendly.”
“Yeah well he can be as friendly as he wants with me, just as long as he
keeps his eyes off you.”
Jade scoffed. “Okay first, he wasn’t even looking at me, and second, I’m
not some little Barbie doll that you can keep in your pocket and only show off
to your friends. I can make my own decisions.” With that she walked away
swiftly, leaving Bryce with a dumbfounded look on his face.
“Youch. If only looks could kill,” Tristan commented as they made their
way down the hall to the admissions office.
“What are you blabbering about?” Eric said, already hating where they
were.
“I’m talking about the look on that guy’s face, didn’t you see it? It
was all terminator and shit. Like if I made one wrong move it was gonna be
hasta la vista baby.”
Eric chuckled. “Barely here five minutes and you’re already making
friends?”
“Well you know me, always the friendly type.” They found their way to
the admissions office and picked up their class schedules and locker room
numbers. Both cursed when they saw their first class was math and dragged their
feet all the way to the classroom.
Eric first noticed her as he sat down at the rear of the room. She was
sitting on his left, by the windows, her rich glossy hair a damning contrast to
her near flawless pale skin. Raven chose that moment to turn her head and
caught him staring at her. She inhaled deeply and suddenly turned away, looking
very uncomfortable. Strange, Eric thought. He’d swear he always had a positive
effect on women but this one was somehow different.
To his right, Tristan was in his own thoughts. He’d noticed the same
girl he’d seen staring at them outside was in his class, her fiery red hair
looking like a beacon in the front of the class. Maybe this dump won’t be so
bad after all, he thought. He would have to proceed with caution. If she was
somehow involved with that brute he’d seen her with, things could get
complicated. A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. Yes this place wouldn’t
be so bad after all.
The lesson had started almost twenty minutes ago but Raven had not
noticed. Her mind was just thinking about blood, his blood. She was very
confused because blood was everywhere in this school but his just had a
peculiar scent to it, like it was somehow special or something. She suddenly
felt very self conscious and wished the lesson could end sooner. She would have
to stay clear of this guy and hoped this was the only class she had with him.
The day wore on and much to Raven’s dismay, Eric was right there with
her in each class she went to, and so was his blood. Raven vowed to become a
vegetarian if she survived the day and was relieved to hear the last bell go.
She quickly packed her books and hurried out of the classroom, eager to get to
the safety of her home.
Eric watched as she sped off down the hall and frowned. He would
certainly have to get to the bottom of what happened here today. His male ego
had taken a big hit and he felt only the dark haired beauty could sooth his
wounded pride.
Jade was busy with putting back some books in her locker and did not see
Tristan creep silently to stand beside her. She was shocked when she heard his
voice and quickly spun around.
“Sorry,” Tristan apologized, “I didn’t mean to startle you.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Jade beamed, glad to finally talk to him. She’d
been waiting for an opportunity to do that the entire day.
Tristan stuck out a hand and introduced himself, noticing that the
underside of her hand felt just a tad rough.
Jade felt a strange warm feeling come over her at his touch and wondered
why at that moment, she was feeling like a school girl with some childhood
crush. She prayed that he did not notice her reddening cheeks and decided to
distract him. “I haven’t seen you around before, are you new here?”
“Oh yeah, we just moved here a couple of days before school started.
Though to tell you the truth, my brother and I hadn’t been for the idea in the
first place but our mom can be pretty persuasive when she wants to.”
“I know the feeling,” Jade said, referring to her own parents adamantly
refusing to let her change schools. “I take it your brother is the one with the
dark tousled hair that looks like it needs a couple bottles of shampoo? I only
ask cause he’s the only other new guy I noticed in class apart from that weird
chick who kept staring out the window.”
“That’s the one and only,” Tristan answered. “Eric Xavier, my annoying
but fortunately gay brother.”
“He’s gay?”
Tristan nodded but found he couldn’t keep his poker face on and burst
out laughing. “I’m just messing around with you; he’s as straight as they
come.”
“Oh you’re just the worst brother ever,” she said, wishing she had a
brother she could torture so.
“Don’t be so quick to defend him, he does the same thing. I’ve just beat
him to the punch this time.”
Jade’s soft little giggles came to a sudden halt as she saw Bryce
walking towards them. “I uh…I gotta go,” she said quickly, already walking
away.
Tristan caught her gently by the arm. “Wait,” he said. “Do you wanna
like hang out with me sometime?”
“I just met you five minutes ago,” Jade said, though a silent voice in
her head had just whispered yes.
Tristan shrugged. “It’s not my most subtle approach but I wanted to give
it a shot before my brother did. He very rarely fails to notice a beautiful
lady such as you. I’m still in shock I got here first.”
“Oh jeez what a line,” Jade said, blushing despite herself. Out of the
corner of her eye, she saw Bryce and knew what was coming so she quickly gave
him her number and walked over to Bryce, turning him away from the inevitable
argument and pulling along despite his protests of wanting to just “talk” to
the guy.
Tristan felt elated and watched as Jade dragged Bryce along. He smiled
when Bryce looked back but all he got was that cold dark stare again.
